Yamantaka is also called Vajrabhairava. Yamantaka is a ferocious emanation from Bodhisattva Manjushri and belongs to the supreme Yoga Tantra. His function is to subdue the Lord of Death (Yama). In the simplest form of Yamantaka (as depicted here), his head is that of a buffalo. His two principal hands hold a skull bowl and a chopper (Kartaki). The phallus is erect with a red tip. He has a crown of skulls and a third eye. He wears a belt of severed heads and steps to the right. His body is blue in colour and he wears bone ornaments. Beneath his feet are a subjugated bull and naked man. |
