Mythologically, the Green Tara came into being when the Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara cried upon seeing all of the suffering in the Universe. He cried so much that a pond grew out of his tears. The practice of Green Tara helps to overcome fear and anxiety, but devotees also believe that she can grant wishes, eliminate suffering of all kinds and bring happiness. Out of this pond grew a blue lotus flower, and on this flower appeared a beautiful woman. Green Tara translucent green color was luminous with a great energy. Green Tara held a deep blue lotus, symbolizing limitless giving and refuge. The color green is said to symbolize her quick action, and also her role as a forest deity . Tibetan culture, and some others, green is considered to include all the other colors.
Green Tara is often depicted in a posture of ease with right leg extended, signifying her readiness to spring into action. The left leg is folded in the contemplative position on the lotus pedestal, shows here remaining in meditation: her dangling right footindicates that she so acts for the benefit of all beings. the two together thus symbolizing the integration of wisdom and art. |
